Photo Repairs

The unfortunate thing about film photography is that the paper that the image is printed on is somewhat fragile.  One mishandling and you will find the photograph in need of some photo repairs.

In the past there was really nothing that could be done with a creased or torn photo.  If the crease was not too bad you might be able to press it out so it was not as noticeable, but that was the extent of the photo repairs that were available.  Fortunately, times have changed.  With the digital image programs you can have your photos repaired very quickly and inexpensively.

Photo repairs are made possible with the development of digital technology.  That allows you to scan your damaged photos into a computer and then make all of the repairs electronically.  You don’t even have to send in your original photo.  You can send the digital copy via email, and your original stays safe and sound in your possession.

One of the techniques used to fix old photos is called cloning, and it involves copying an undamaged area of the photo and using that to replace the damaged area.  Once the copied area is pasted over the damage it is a matter of blending and smoothing the edges so that it is not noticeable.

Repairs of this type are relatively inexpensive, and can usually be accomplished and sent back to you within a day or two, depending on how busy the repair service is.  Often times you can send your picture in the morning and have the repaired version back in your hands by the same evening.

  1. It will require the photo repair specialist to try to patch together the missing area by taking parts from other photos and blending it to replace the part that is missing.

If the problem with your photo is fading and discolouration, the repair specialist may have to go through each area of the photograph to adjust the colours back to what they were originally.  While this process is fairly straight forward, it can be very time consuming especially if the colours has almost disappeared. In this case it may be necessary to convert the photo to black and white and then colour by hand.  These types of repairs may take a bit longer to repair than it would for a simple fading or contrast ajustment.

The point is, do not give up on a photo just because it has become damaged.  The current technology makes it possible to repair the photos to their original condition.  The image you will get back can be enlarged and printed in a size that is suitable for framing.

Don’t let damage to your photos keep you from enjoying the memories that they represent.  Look into photo repairs for your old photographs and bring them back out where they belong.

Create Photo Books to Tell a Story

We all know that every picture tells a thousand words, doesn’t it? If that is true, then an organised form of many photos will surely tell a story. And you can add words to your pictures as well. Don’t we feel that it is a great idea to present our photos, especially in a documented form depicting an important event with family or friends?
You have ample opportunities on websites, to create galleries and photo books to showcase your memories. If you want to use the photo books online medium to tell a story, it’s easy!

To create a photo book, you will need to think about the story first, what is it exactly you want to tell with the pictures. You might say that it is very obvious, but there is a subtle side to it as well. Let’s presume that you want to create a photo book for your son’s first league season. Just including all the photos of your son in it might not tell the story in a clear fashion. Rather, pick only relevant pictures which will flow in an order and tell a story; i.e. some special events that took place during league season, special moments, and game or some great plays by him.

It is better to plan your story photo book well in advance of such occasions or events. This will help you in capturing the pictures which will best suit the photo books, rather than being a group of unorganized snapshots. While taking the snaps of league, make a point that you take pictures of his teammates as well. The obvious reason behind is that, your son can give copies of the same photo book to his teammates as well. A well-documented photo book will make an impact on everyone. The photo book will surely make your son more popular among his peers, and this will make him happy too.
You may want to use a consistant layout format for creating very organized photo books. Following the given example, you can create a sport yearbook format, which will have entries according to the game, pictures, box scores, standings, etc. You can also include team practice pictures as well. If this is done properly and logically, it could become a lasting testament for your son’s season and both of you will cherish the memories.

You can create a photo book for any such occasions or events which you want to capture and cherish lifelong. The subject can change with an individual’s choice and taste or importance. Some common examples of photo book telling a story are vacations, weddings, the first ballet of your daughter, or even your dog bath. The subject of your photo book story can literally be anything but the secret is developing the sequence of the story – a beginning, middle and end.

Choosing the Right Digital Camera

In the world of digital cameras there are way too many choices for the normal person to ever begin to grasp.  Without at least a Master’s degree in digital imaging, it can get quite confusing.  Do not despair though, there is hope.  Many of the features and options that are available in these new cameras can be overlookedby most of us and are geared more toward professionals in the field.  Nikon hascome to terms with this is now offering more convenience and simplicity to their cameras.  They are not the only ones though.  More and more companies are starting to cut back on the pro specific options and offer better phones for the average user.  Here is a look at what really matters with a digital camera.

Mega pixels are really the most confusing part about buying a camera.  How many are enough? What is a mega pixel?  Why does it matter? How tall is the space needle? These are just a few of the questions that you may have.  It is actually pretty simple when you start to understand the terms. Mega pixels are a digital measurement.  If you think of the old dot-matrix printers, you can get a great visualization of this.  Each dot is a pixel.  The more pixels you have, the clearer the image.  Anything over 5 mega pixels is not necessary.  A 35 mm picture from actual film is about 5 mega pixels in quality.  Mega Pixels only come into play when you are getting images together for digital display.  If you are going to display the picturesonline or in a digital frame, then you may choose to go up to ten, but other wise 5 and 6 are more than adequate.

Red eye reduction and the editing software are the other two important features of a camera.  Having the red eye reduction built in the camera is very nice and much more effectivethan having it in the software.  Having a nice software suite is another boon. You want to be able to get the precise image that you desire.  That is the luxury of a digital camera.  Having the right software can really make the images into your pictures.

How to Make Two Versions of Soft Focus in Photoshop With Quite Different Effects

With a soft-focus effect, it’s the highlights which become blurred and diffused.  When soft focus is created in the camera with a soft focus filter or lens, it is the whites, the highlights, which blur into the darker areas.

With traditional darkroom printing, when a soft-focus filter is used over the lens, the highlights of the negative are the clear parts of the film. These clear areas represent the shadow portions of the image. So with soft focus created at the printing stage, it is the shadow portions of the image which blur and spread into the lighter areas of the image.

The effect is reversed.
This would be the same with colour or black and white film.

The results can look very different and are achieved in Photoshop in different ways.

  1. Open an image, such as a portrait.
  2. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
The image should be over-blurred at this stage, so enter a high value like 30, although this can depend on the resolution of your image.
  3. Go to Edit > Fade Gaussian Blur.
  4. Change Mode from Normal to Lighten.
  5. The amount of blur can be controlled here, so reduce Opacity to 90%. OK.
This is the type of effect achieved when a soft focus filter is used over the camera lens.
  6. Open the History palette and click on the Create new snapshot icon at the bottom of the palette.
  7. Still in the History palette, click on the Open state, which takes the image back to before the Gaussian Blur filter was applied.
  8. Use Ctrl + F / Cmd + F to reapply the filter.
  9. Go to Edit > Fade Gaussian Blur.
  10. Change Mode to Darken.
  11. Reduce Opacity to 80%. OK.
This is the type of effect achieved when a soft focus filter is used over the enlarger lens when printing a negative.
  12. Open the History palette and click on the icon at the bottom to create a snapshot of this image.
  13. Toggle between Snapshot 1 and Snapshot 2 to compare both images.

Either image can be saved while its history state is active.
One looks more romantic; the other can look more moody or with the right subject it can look sinister.

Different Blending Modes can really transform an image and produce interesting results, by changing the look and feel of an image.

Tips for Taking Great Photos for Photo Gifts

Once you decide to get a custom photo gift you will need to get the photos for the gift. That is why we have created this quick help guide full of tips for taking the perfect photo for your photo gift.  These tips will help you get the best picture for your present.  There are a couple things that you will need to keep in mind.  Thereare likely several different questions that you may have on how to make the perfect gift even better. From color coordination to image selection and themes, you will want to make sure that you are getting the best image for the gift that you choose to give.  This can be even more important than picking the right gift.  There are several different aspects to keep in mind.  This guide will help to aid you inyour photo selection.  It may also help you to get the images for the gift if you do not already have them. If you still need help, feel free to contact us for even more tips and tricks to getting the perfect photo.

Image selection:

This maybe the most important step in the process of your personalized photo gift.  Once you have decided on the gift that you are getting for someone, you will need to choose the photo to put on it.  Many times, a theme is the best route to go.  If it is a Father’s day present, you will want to put a picture of the children or family on the gift, a romantic present will need a nice picture of the family or the significant other on it.  There are many different options for this step.  Only you will know what is best.  A fun loving gift will call for a more “whacky” or candid image, while more serious gifts or puzzles may call for a memorable landscape or professional looking photo.  You will want to look at the concept of the gift and decide on whether a current photo or new image is needed.

Color:

Color isa very important thing when taking pictures.  If the colors are too bright or loud they may take from the image, while if they are too dull or lifeless, they will not be as appealing.  Color balance is our next tip for your photo gift. One thing that you will want to keep in mind is the color coordination to use.  Many personalized photo gifts will need to be in bright and vibrant colors.  Many photo gifts are used to be bright and cheery with the intent of making someone’s day brighter and happier.  This means that you should use bright and colorful images for many of the personalized photo gifts.  A nice bright colorful picture suits many ofthese photo gifts.  If you are taking the photo for the gift instead of a current image that you may have, you will want to look at the background and clothing that is going to be in the photo.  Dark backgrounds trend to brighten the image butcan often clash with the gift that you are putting the image on.  Brighter settings may also take away from the people in the image and dull the colors in the picture.  A nice balance of colors and background brightness is the best route to take. You will want to keep the photo gift in mind as well.  IF the image is being transferred to a darker wood style present, you may want a slightly darker background while the brighter, white cups and steins will require a lighter background color.  If you are using a darker background, brighter colors should be worn as well.  This will really help the focus of the photo stand out against the background.  Lighter backgrounds should contain darker and color rich clothing on the people in thepicture.  Bold colors tend to be more noticeable on a lighter background.  One other factor should be considered when you think of color.

Theme:

If this gift will be used for a holiday, you may want to consider that many holidays have acolor theme.  One tip to making a great gift is to keep a theme.  Saint Patrick’s Day has green while Christmas has a red and green theme and Halloween is more orange and brown.  If you are making a holiday themed gift, you may want to keep with the color scheme of the holiday.  A Valentine’s Day keepsake boxmay require a more red color scheme to the photo, while an “over the hill” birthday theme may be better suited to a black and white layout.  The theme is also important when you are using several photos for your photo gift. If you are giving a gift that has multiple photos, you may want to keep to a common idea in the photos.  If you are giving a photo box with four different pictures for a Mother’s day present, you would want to have all four pictures of the family or children.  A picture of each child separately and one together may be a great idea for this present.  You will want to keep in mind the idea behind the gift when selecting the image.

Taking the Picture:

When it comes to taking the picture that you will use, one tip is the placement of the people in the image.  It is a good rule of thumb to have the focus of the image take up around 60% of the total picture.  This puts the focus on the subject of the picture.  There is no set formula or magic equation for the perfect amount of space that the main object of the picture should be in, but having too much of the personin the picture can look very amateur while not having enough will lose the focus of the image completely.  By keeping the focus of the picture in about 60-70% of the whole photo, you will get the idea across and have a very professional looking product.  One other tip to a great photo is to keep the subject just off of center.  If you imagine a small square in the middle of the picture and put the subject of the photo on one of the corners, you can get a very professional looking picture.  Many times when the focus of the image is dead center, the background can belost or even distracting.  By having the main idea of the picture slightly off of center, you can have a very visually appealing look to your photos.  With the subject slightly to the side, the background will help to augment your picture and notlook like it is competing with the subject for dominance.  A slight offset tendto blend the image with the surroundings.

By following these tips and advice, you can easily create a keepsake that will be proudly displayed for years to come.  These are just some basic tips and ideas for your photo gifts.  For more advice and tips to taking great photos you can feel free to contactus.  We are always here to help you so that you can get the best pictures possible.  Whether you decide to use our services or not, we are always available to give tips and advice.  Here at Printable Memories, our goal is your satisfaction.
