How To Take Great Landscape Photographs – Understanding You Zoom Lens And Perspective

When it comes landscape photography there are many elements that you need to take into account to truly capture amazing scenery. You need to study the scene and look at lighting and how to frame any landscape picture. Another two areas to consider are the use of zoom and perspective.

Zoom and Landscapes

By zooming out you can capture more of the view so you need a wide-angled lens to keep everything in focus whilst still maximizing the “depth of field”. This will lead you photograph to have greater feeling of depth in the shot. If you zoom in you will flatten the sense of perspective and make objects appear closer together than they are actually are. Another result of zooming in will be the amount of picture that is in focus. It will allow you to isolate details against an out of focus foreground and/or background. If you to zoom in on a landscape shot make sure you avoid the camera from shaking as any tiny movement will be exaggerated leading to blurry image.

Perspective

If you want to create perspective to get a great shot then you can use line and shapes within the shot to draw the eye in. A good example is if you try to photograph and tall building it will have the appearance of “leaning back” in the final shot. This is an undesirable effect but can be counter-acted by also using something in the foreground. You can increase the sense of perspective by using a wide-angled lens and adding foreground interest. Another suggestion is to use a low viewpoint and wide angle setting as this will help to contrast the size and shape of the objects in attention-grabbing ways.
